Conclusion:
It’s a muff and strapped with some of limitations inherit in the design, so there isn’t a ton of tonal flexibility available here. The construction choices and execution are a little on the weak side, but nothing unexpected for a pedal that is available new for less than $60. The large size, and lack of a power supply connector keep it from being super pedalboard friendly. Those negatives aside, I think this pedal sounds great! There are some very useful settings to be found here and I was able to capture not only a strong sustaining fuzz with a lot of harmonic sizzle, but still retains a decent punch on the low end! Maybe this one is a gem, but given this pedal’s reputation as a go-to pedal amongst bass players, I doubt it. I can see why it has the fan base it does.
Kudos to EHX for creating a top notch sounding fuzz at entry-level costs. If you like the smooth creamy goodness of this pedal and don’t mind the limitations… I can’t imagine a better bang for your buck.
As always, if you have any questions, leave a comment or let me know
Note: A rating of 5 = acceptable and should considered a ‘good’ basic score

About the old Sovtek, BYOC makes a great clone of both the Ram’s head and the Triangle Knob muffs (as well as the swollen pickle, but you already know about that). You should try one of those. They are basically identical to the originals, and I’ve been dying to hear one on bass.
BTW, I like the knew intro graphic thing on the video overview.
cool! thanks for going through one of the hallmark fuzz boxes.
Do you think this one will have problems in a band mix? (sorta like my LBM)
I would guess any pedal with the kind of mid-scoop the muff presents could have problems.
mmmm that’s bad do I have other choice than blending some clean signal?
Hey, that pedal looks familiar! ;)
are you thinking to try USA Version to?
Oh yeah, eventually.
