Fuzz Review: Rogue Sound – Savage Henry

Cosmetic concerns & Conclusion:

This pedal is constructed with care, but the decision to exclude a LED baffles me. The “you will know when it’s on” crowd has a point, but frankly the target market for a pedal in this price range is also the group that tends to run larger boards and keeping things straight becomes more important. Why the pedal uses a 3PDT for bypass but skips this baffles me, so I added the $2 in parts to make it happen.

Honestly, I can’t say that the pedal was worth what I paid and seems like a grab at the hardcore D*A*M crowd’s cash. It’s pretty feeble with a bass (as expected) and while it’s decent on guitar, it doesn’t compare to many less expensive pedals in my opinion. If you want something that sounds and responds like this pedal does, I’d recommend exploring the significantly cheaper pedals in the Devi Ever line (the BIT comes to mind).

Henry is loud and obnoxious, and might serve a purpose for someone playing lead bass. He fails to bring the low-end along (perhaps out of spite) and as such does nothing for me while handling bass duties. The austere aesthetics work, but I think a pedal in this price range should be more than a bare metal box. The construction of the pedal is top notch, which points to its family relationship to D*A*M pedals. The exclusion of a LED is something that just bothers me, and I’ll never forgive a builder for excluding this option, it fails to make sense to me. Additional construction quirks include the placement of the DC jack below the input jacks and on the left side.

As always, if you have any questions, leave a comment or let me know

Note: A rating of 5 = acceptable and should be considered a ‘good’ basic score

That’s a bit harsh… I wouldn’t rate it that low. I kind of like it actually

  • I didn’t like it AT ALL on bass. It wasn’t designed for application on bass, so sometimes you get what you expect. ;)

Maybe it’s just that I haven’t heard it in person, but there were plenty of lows still pumping through my sub when you had it on. Sounded fairly huge to me, actually, in all ranges. I happen to like its character as well. Any perceived low end loss it does impart isn’t something that can’t be remedied with ye olde timey LS-2, as far as I hear.

  • I actually found most of the original review I wrote (and the scores I gave) from back in January in my backup stuff. I’ve updated the review and scores to reflect this.

    Hi,

that’s an awesome and huge sounding pedal. Can you tell me which transitors are used in there? That would be interesting.
    Thanks in advance.
